Amazon’s New 2026 Kindles Are Here
If you’ve been waiting for the new Kindle lineup, it’s finally here.
On October 1, 2026, Amazon unveiled a completely redesigned Kindle family: a new 6-inch Kindle, a new Kindle Paperwhite, and a new Kindle Colorsoft, along with Kids editions and a new lineup of accessories—including a Page-Turn Cover that brings physical page-turn buttons back to Kindle reading.
Here’s everything you need to know—and which one might be right for your reading life.
What’s new across the whole lineup
Amazon has redesigned the Kindle family from the display up, giving all three main models a new flush-front design with no raised border interrupting the reading surface. The company says the new display architecture also allows the devices to be thinner and more portable.
A few of the biggest changes include:
Flush-front displays. The screen now sits seamlessly with the front of the device, eliminating the raised border around the display.
Thinner, lighter designs. All three new Kindle models are thinner and lighter than their predecessors.
Aluminum options. For the first time, the entry-level 6-inch Kindle is available with an aluminum back.
User-replaceable batteries. Amazon’s 2026 Kindle documentation identifies the new 6-inch Kindle models as having user-replaceable, EBR-compliant batteries.
New colors. The lineup introduces Ube, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, and Graphite, with Fig making its debut on the Colorsoft lineup.
Physical page-turn buttons—sort of. Amazon is bringing buttons back through a separate $79.99 Page-Turn Cover for the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition.
The new Kindle (6-inch)
Price: $149.99 (16GB) · $189.99 (aluminum, 32GB)
Availability: Shipping now
Amazon calls this its most pocket-sized Kindle ever. The new 6-inch model has a flush-front display, 16GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life, and Amazon says it opens books about 30% faster than the previous release. The power button has also moved to the top-right side of the device.
The standard Kindle comes in Ube and Graphite. The aluminum-backed version has 32GB of storage and comes in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green. The aluminum model is also slightly more premium in construction, with an aluminum back and matte finish.
Best for: Commuters, purse-and-pocket readers, and anyone buying their first e-reader.
The new Kindle Paperwhite (7-inch)
Price: $199.99 (16GB) · $249.99 Signature Edition (32GB)
Availability: Pre-order now; ships October 28
The Paperwhite remains Amazon’s sweet spot for readers who want a more premium everyday e-reader.
The new model is thinner and lighter than the previous generation, while retaining its waterproof design and adjustable warm light. Amazon says the redesigned display delivers the highest contrast ratio of any Kindle Paperwhite and the largest Paperwhite display yet, helping text remain crisp in bright sunlight or while reading under the covers. Battery life is rated at up to 12 weeks.
The Signature Edition adds an aluminum rear housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo-pin dock charging, and double-tap page turning. It comes in Graphite and Seaglass Green.
Best for: Most readers. If you read every day, travel with your Kindle, or like reading at the beach or in the bath, the Paperwhite is probably the best all-around choice.
The new Kindle Colorsoft (7-inch color)
Price: $289.99 (16GB) · $319.99 Signature Edition (32GB)
Availability: Pre-order now; ships October 28
The new Kindle Colorsoft gets a redesigned color E Ink display designed to deliver richer, more paper-like color while reducing the harsh glare associated with traditional tablet screens. Amazon says the redesigned display improves color, brightness, clarity, and uniformity.
If you read comics, graphic novels, illustrated books, travel guides, cookbooks, or simply love seeing your book covers in color, this is the Kindle to watch.
The Colorsoft Signature Edition adds aluminum housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turning, and pogo-pin dock charging. It comes in Graphite and Fig.
Best for: Graphic novel and manga fans, readers who love illustrated books, and anyone who wants a more colorful reading experience.
Kindle Kids editions
The new Kindle, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft families also have Kids versions with artist-designed, kid-friendly covers and 12 months of Amazon Kids+ included. Amazon says the subscription provides access to thousands of books and audiobooks.
Kids models start at $179.99.
For parents, the biggest appeal may be the distraction-free nature of the Kindle experience: no social media, messaging, or app notifications competing with reading time.
The new accessories
This is where the 2026 Kindle refresh gets particularly interesting for longtime Kindle fans.
Kindle Click ($34.99)
Amazon’s new Kindle Click is a Bluetooth page-turn remote designed for hands-free reading.
Prop up your Kindle and turn pages from under the covers, on a treadmill, or from an airplane tray table without reaching for the screen. The remote also includes buttons for adjusting brightness.
The Kindle Click works with all of the new Kindle devices as well as Kindle models released in 2024 or later.
Bonus: If you already have a compatible recent Kindle, you may not need to buy a new e-reader at all.
Page-Turn Cover ($79.99)
Physical page-turn buttons are back—but they’re built into the cover, not the Kindle itself.
The Page-Turn Cover is a magnetic case with integrated physical buttons that connects through pogo pins. It’s compatible with the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition.
For longtime Kindle Oasis fans, this may be one of the most interesting accessories Amazon has introduced in years.
Charging Dock ($59.99)
The new Charging Dock keeps the Paperwhite Signature Edition or Colorsoft Signature Edition upright while charging.
It’s particularly suited to a nightstand or reading nook, where the Kindle can stay visible and ready to pick up.
New covers ($39.99 and up)
Amazon is also introducing new covers in knit fabric, plant-based leather, and pebbled premium leather.
The covers are color-matched across the lineup, while slim magnetic-attach covers are available for devices with aluminum housing.

Which new Kindle should you buy?
On a budget or want maximum portability?
Go with the new 6-inch Kindle. It gives you the essential Kindle reading experience in the smallest package, starting at $149.99.
Want the best all-around reader?
The Paperwhite is our pick for most readers. It’s waterproof, has adjustable warm light, a larger 7-inch display, and up to 12 weeks of battery life.
Must have physical page-turn buttons?
You’ll need a Paperwhite Signature Edition or Colorsoft Signature Edition, plus the $79.99 Page-Turn Cover. That means you’re looking at at least $329.98 for the Paperwhite Signature setup.
If you simply want hands-free page turning, the $34.99 Kindle Click is a much cheaper option and works with the new Kindles plus compatible 2024-and-later models.
Read comics, manga, or love color?
The Colorsoft is the obvious choice. Its color E Ink display is designed specifically for readers who want more than black-and-white text.
Already own a 2024 Kindle?
You may not need to upgrade. If hands-free page turning is what you’re after, try the Kindle Click first.
Should you wait for a sale?
The timing of this launch is interesting because Amazon’s fall Prime Big Deal Days takes place October 6–7, just days after the new Kindles were announced.
The new 6-inch Kindle is already available, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft don’t ship until October 28. There is no guarantee that the newly announced models will receive discounts during Prime Big Deal Days.
If you’re looking for a bargain, the arrival of the new lineup may make previous-generation Kindles worth watching. But if you want one of the redesigned 2026 models, I wouldn’t buy based on the assumption that a launch-week discount is coming.
